Mitochondria and their Critical Role in

Autism and Related Disorders

The mitochondria are considered the powerhouse of the cells. They produce billions of the chemical ATP daily to fuel the metabolic activity of the entire body, including the brain and nervous system, digestion, immune function, etc.

It is well documented that everyone with chronic health issues has some problem occurring at the level of the mitochondria, and this includes individuals with special needs. The mitochondria are dependent on nearly all the nutrients we require from our diet, but there are specific deficiencies that increase the potential for mitochondria imbalances.

Because of their high metabolic activity, mitochondria are also vulnerable to toxic compounds produced internally or acquired environmentally. This lecture by Kurt N. Woeller, DO of Integrative Medicine Academy and Autism Recovery System will cover these topics and more, and discuss ways of assessing mitochondrial function and their relationship to many core issues seen in special needs individuals.
